Largest Turnout Ever for Golf Classic

On Thursday, June 4th, staff, alumni, and friends of Shawnigan descended upon UBC’s University Golf Club to take part in the 17th Annual DHL Shawnigan Golf Classic. A record 126 golfers hit the links for a 1:00 PM shotgun start that featured sunny skies and record-high temperatures, and more than one foursome in strong contention for the coveted gold jackets bestowed upon the winners.  The sunshine came as a welcome change after last year's event was marred by heavy rain - here's hoping future golf tournaments follow suit!

After a long round of golf and a barbeque buffet dinner, the golfers were treated to Headmaster David Robertson’s always entertaining “State of Shawnigan” address. The Head took advantage of the opportunity to thank all those in attendance and also to poke some fun at a couple of his guests from West Point Grey Academy and St. George’s!

Golf Committee Chairman Chris Cooper ’88 took the microphone next as the awards portion of the evening commenced. After the awarding of a number of excellent raffle prizes, it was time for the big awards. Notable winners included Daryel Gough ’75 receiving the “Dale Mearns Best Dressed Golfer Award”, and the team of Doug Anderson, Harold Hayes, Len Chaston, and Roland Borsato (all 1972 grads), earning the distinction of “Most Honest Golfers.” Next came the presentation of the gold jackets to the winning team, with an almost impossible score of 58: Ian Gee, Colin Creuzot, Steve Quinn (all ’90), and guest golfer Sean Glenfield. Finally, the evening’s biggest winner was revealed, with Phil Head ’66 holding the lucky ticket as winner of the 50/50 draw, an astonishing $975! Phil was kind enough to buy champagne for several attendees and also donated a portion of his winnings to the Graham L. Anderson Scholarship.

While more of a “friend raiser” than a fundraiser, this year’s tournament still managed to raise more than $2000 for the DHL Scholarships. As always the event would not have been possible if not for the efforts of the Golf Committee and our volunteers, including Lindsay Mearns ’69, Joy Yorath, Alana Husby ’93, Louise Borsato, and Kate Borsato, along with SLS staff Roland Borsato ’72, Noralie Hooper, and Charlotte Hartley. We look forward to more blue skies and low rounds on June 3, 2010, for next year’s tournament, but take note: while groups of any size are welcome to join in the fun, starting next year, only foursomes will be allowed to walk away with the victor’s spoils!
