The Power of 'Live'
One of the best things you can do in your youth is to perform some live theatre and the next best thing is to go and see it. There's something that can affect you in ways not possible with movies and recordings when the moments are living and real and you catch them! Maybe too, it's the pact that you have to make tacitly when you enter a theatre for a live show; you allow yourself to accept the theatrical illusion and you suspend your disbelief. Emotions can hang in the air and both joys and sadnesses be felt more keenly. Theatre can also cause you to think, call into question your views and force you to articulate them in a way that will stand up to scrutiny. All of that is very good for young people, but it's equally vital for adults who can be too set in their ways and opinions. What is also very beneficial about having the courage to take on a stage role is the effect on a person's self-confidence. As the beautiful plaque in our new Theatre Foyer says : " The enemy of art is fear" and the conquering of that fear can lead to myriad benefits for all of us.
