Model UN
One of the more interesting things that I am undertaking right now is a project in Socials for all Grade 10 students to participate in the Model UN. The Model UN gives students a chance to experience what the United Nations is like. At Shawnigan, Model UN is normally a Fine Art. In Grade 10, all the Socials classes are going to try to simulate what the Model UN group does. This is the most interesting academic project I have done in Term 1 at Shawnigan.
A couple weeks ago, we picked partners and then drew a country name out of a hat. My country is Bangladesh. We were then given a digital copy of a list of questions that were needed to be completed. This was the research part of the Project. At the end of this project, we will have a major debate with all the countries talking about individual problems and how they can be resolved.
The main topic of this year's Model UN is Climate Change and how it can affect the country and how it can be prevented with the help of other countries. I think this is a great way to learn about countries that we didn't even know existed. We can also learn about the cultures of these different countries and their problems dealing with Climate Change and what needs to happen in order for them to succeed in developing, especially the undeveloped countries like Bangladesh. This may not seem useful now, but if you are one of those people who loves helping people out, and you go to a country like Bangladesh to help out, you will have to know quite a lot about what is happening to this country and what aid it needs.
I have often wondered “What is the UN,” “What do they talk about in the UN”, “Why is the UN important.” This socials project has already opened my eyes to the answers of those questions, this is why I think Model UN is very interesting and will be extremely useful for me later in life.
In conclusion, I want you to think about a third-world country that you know fairly well, and think of the issues that they need help solving and some solutions to those issues that you might raise in a Model UN debate.
