Sr. Girls' Rugby at Provincials
***UPDATE: The Shawnigan girls lost a heartbreaker in yesterday’s rugby final against a powerful Robert Bateman side from the Fraser Valley. The two teams exchanged penalty kicks and went into the second half tied at 3-3. It was a bruising battle with the Robert Bateman side playing a tight forward game that seldom saw the ball moved past their outside half. Shawnigan’s defence stood up well and denied them any more scoring in regular time. Shawnigan had its moments but struggled to get the upper hand. Some outstanding kicking by Lizzie and Jules often pinned Bateman deep in their half but some clever play by Bateman’s fullback managed to get them out of trouble. Jules attempt at putting Shawnigan ahead late in the second half just missed by inches. The game was tied in regular time and it moved into two five-minute overtime periods. Much the same game occurred with Bateman pounding on Shawnigan and Shawnigan turning them back. It wasn’t until the last minute of the second overtime period that Bateman managed to free up the their fullback who scored a lovely try in the corner. The game was a nail biter from start to finish with both teams leaving everything they had on the field. The girls can be proud of the success they have had throughout the season and the Provincial tournament. It was unfortunate that their only loss of the season happened in a double overtime final. Congratulations girls on a superb performance!***

The Sr. Girls rugby won both of their games on Thursday to move into the semi finals against an upstart team from Merritt. On Thursday morning, the “Iron Women” met Hugh McRoberts from Richmond and escaped with a narrow victory 8-7. Shawnigan found themselves behind in the first 5 minutes with a well-earned try by an aggressive McRoberts team to set the tone of the game. The contest was very physical and the Shawnigan forwards were up to the task and did their part in setting up the final try in the dying seconds of the game. Emilie drove over the line after a series of “pick and go’s” to move ahead 8-7 on the final whistle. Much was learned from this shortened game and once again the girls fought every inch of the way to earn their victory. In the afternoon, Shawnigan won easily against Sahali from Kamloops to advance to the next round. Bruised and battered the girls move into the semi-finals on Friday at 3pm at Semiahmoo Secondary in White Rock.
