In search of my morning ‘jolt’, I went into Shawnigan Village just after 6:00am today to get coffee at the local café and was greeted by the barista who asked, “So, I guess School has now begun?” I answered that, yes, the new school year was indeed under way. She then said something that I want to share with all of you because it was the best start to the day that I could have wished for. She said, “Shawnigan students are so polite and well-mannered – you should be proud of them.”

Well, the last exam is over, the last report has been read and the machines are buzzing and scraping in the various parts of the School where construction or renovation are going on. An eerie stillness will now descend upon the campus, at least until the first of the summer groups arrives and then we get to see the Shawnigan world through the eyes of countless visitors. That’s an interesting and valuable perspective for any place and it does ensure that we continually appreciate what we have.

Winding up to wind down is often how we characterize the last few weeks of the school year and the intensity of this last spell would do justice to that description. It has been a wonderful finish overall, however, to a very special year and I think that the various components of the celebrations would attest to that. The only time in life that we want to be detached from our emotions is when we are making big decisions, otherwise, we should be emotionally involved in what we are doing – it makes it all that much more meaningful and relevant.

What a week it has been for the School! You will have seen the highlights documented on the web-site, so I will content myself by just offering some additional commentary. The support that our students bring to everything that they attend, whether it be a rugby championship or a fine arts concert, is remarkable and invariably remarked upon by others. Such was the case in the euphoria of Thunderbird stadium at UBC when the black and gold clad hordes mobbed the successful first fifteen at the final whistle of the provincial championship final!
