Evo Marcon

Evo Marcon came to Shawnigan to tutor math and has taken on a math class and is an integral member of the Learning Centre. He was born in Trail, B.C., and earned his teaching certificate and degrees in Economics and Commerce at Simon Fraser University. Evo taught on the Sunshine Coast for several years before becoming a photo retailer and professional photographer. He went back to teaching in Atlantic Canada, where he and his wife, Caryl (a writer and visual artist), moved to be closer to family. “We lived for a few years in Lunenburg, south of Halifax. We were amazed by the incredible generational history there and were regarded for our stay as ‘those from away.’ It was hard to fit in.”

Evo and Caryl moved back to the Island and bought an “old, falling down house” on the west side of Shawnigan Lake. “Our house is unique. It is octagonal shaped and hangs out over the water across from Memory Island. The view is stunning.” One of Evo’s pastimes is working on the house. “It was poorly built in the 60s. I can’t do the work myself, but I like to work alongside the contractors and I’ve learned a lot. We have a dock and a rowboat, so we can enjoy the water.” Evo and Caryl share their lakeside home with “Lucky,” their golden retriever.

Upon moving to Shawnigan, Evo began working as a math teacher at Maxwell International School. When Evo learned of the opportunity for tutoring at Shawnigan, he was apprehensive. The School, he had heard, was prestigious and closed to the community. He took the job, regardless, and was surprised by the friendly, cooperative, and supportive environment at Shawnigan. “People used to ask me where I worked and I would tell them, and that would be the end of it. Now, when I say I work at Shawnigan, there are more questions. People are genuinely interested in what goes on here and I can say that I am honoured to give them more information.”

Evo teaches one Math 10 course and provides math support for students who attend the Learning Centre. Val Donahue, Director of the Learning Centre, reports that, “Evo is a wonderfully unique math teacher; he has the ability to make the world of math understandable to anyone. He is a very patient, kind, caring man who is able to work with students of all abilities. The students always want Evo’s undivided attention. He has a great sense of humour and is able to turn any situation into a positive, memorable moment. Evo has made a remarkable contribution to the lives of the students he works with. Because of Evo, these students have experienced a degree of success in math that they never dreamed of before.”
